On a poll of over 130 people: 24% use paw moisturiser.
There are many ways to care for your dogs paws. Please see Paw Care blogs for more generalised information.
This one will concentrate on why you should should consider paw moisturiser.
Why Are Paws Important?
Paw pads act as shock absorbers to protect your dog’s bones and joints. They also create a barrier between his feet and elements such as ice and hot asphalt. In addition, a dog’s paw pads contain scent and sweat glands that are crucial for marking his territory. Given the significant role they play, it’s important to protect their paw pads from cracking.
Why Do Paws Crack?
There is a number of reason to why your dogs paws may crack. It can really depend on your environment and what activity they take part in. Weather is also a big contributor to cracked paws. The cracking of paws can also be a sign of increased activity and the paws changing to accommodate the extra walking. This can cause tough paws which is more commonly seen in working dogs due to their activity levels being relatively high.
Paw Pad tough or dry?
Paw pads appear differently depending on your dog's activity. A dog that does more walking on different surfaces will have tough paws, a dog at home more may have slightly softer paws. The tough paws are not necessarily the ones that need moisturising, and neither are soft. Both tough and soft paws can become dry and it's important to check paws regularly to know if they may need hydrating.
Should You Moisturize Your Dog's Paws?
You should moisturize your dog's paw pads if they are cracked, peeling or too dry. Avoid using human lotions or moisturizers and stick with products made specifically for canine paws. Be careful not to overdo it — if your dog already has soft paw pads, moisturizing them can make them more susceptible to tearing or ripping when they walk on rough surfaces.
It is said that many people do not recognise dry paws. From our mini poll we think people do but maybe they are new to the moisturisers available. When paws are becoming dry if you moisturise them then you will prevent cracking, this can help prevent cuts forming which can mean your dog is more susceptible to infection. Moisturising the paws is not the only way you can help your dogs paws but it can be a useful product, as well as preventing cracking, if the paw is cracked they can help the paw heal.
