National Dog Day means showing your pup appreciation– ok we know they get this every day but they obviously need some more on this day!
Maybe we can also spread this dog appreciation to other pups. They are important in their everyday tasks from being companions, therapy dogs, guide dogs, and security dogs to so much more!
We asked Charlotte, from Tails Trails in Saffron Walden, for some tips:
How can we show them appreciation? Dogs adore love and attention from their humans and equally we absolutely love our dogs! They take great pleasure in pleasing their owner and being happy in their company. So how do you show your pup appreciation? We've come up with a couple of ideas for you to try.
You already take your dog on lots of lovely walks, but why not add in some extra exciting adventures - somewhere really interesting for them, a new route to usual or a different area completely. Some dogs may love to go out with a small group of other dogs whether that's with you meeting up with friends, or their favourite local dog walker and pals. Why not try a new a new activity with them such as agility? The joy a dog has when they please their owner is something else, they'll absolutely love trying new things, it'll help create a wonderful bond between you both and most importantly you'll both cherish those moments.
Most dogs love their food, show them you care by giving them the best food you can. It doesn't necessarily need to be the most expensive on the market, each dog is different after all, but find a healthy balanced food for them. A little extra loving with some super pawsome treats can't go a miss every now and then too right? Why not take your pup to the local pet shop and let them choose their own new special toy? Enjoy that experience together and save that toy for special play times between just the two of you.
Keep some time free to groom your dog, whether that's an appointment at the local dog groomers or just a check over and brush from you. Ensure they're happy with this experience though.
Most of all, celebrate your dog and how much you love them everyday, their lives are short but they have so much love to give. Enjoy each day together and show them how much you appreciate them everyday!

Hear how we and EAQ Grass Roots show their pup appreciation:
Fiona, EAQ Grass Roots:
For me, appreciating the dogs is all about doing something that is solely for them, something I know they will enjoy and something that will meet a need they have. Appreciation can just take a moment; a scratch in a particular spot, allowing them to spend just a little longer sniffing that interesting hedge or letting them just take their own time getting into the car rather than hurrying them along, or it can be a grander gesture; a day out, an afternoon snuggling on the sofa or setting up a favourite activity.
Appreciation will look different for each dog, it’s about the individual dog’s likes and needs. Freddie, our fox red Labrador, seeks human interaction, so on a daily basis I always try to spend a little time just being with him, stroking him in his favourite spots; for Freddie it is his chest and his haunches, and just generally making sure he has my full attention for that moment of the day. Freddie also loves to swim; he will sniff out any water and spend hours in it if he can. So, when he deserves a real treat, we take him to one of his favourite swimming spots and let him splash around for as long as he likes.
Our other dog, Murphy, is a Springador. He loves a cuddle in bed so a treat for him is a morning lie in. We don’t let our dogs sleep on our bed, much to Murphy’s disgust, but when we want to show Murphy a lot of appreciation, he is allowed to come up for a snuggle. We also have a morning routine with Murphy of giving him a scratch on either side of his rib cage as when you do this he does a lovely long stretch (downward dog then upward dog!) and it just seems to set him up for the day.
Showing the dogs appreciation can take a minute or a day and the real key to appreciating them is to observe their reactions and preferences and then allocate time every now and then to meeting their needs.
So today, being National Dog day, we’ll be starting the day with a snuggle in bed with Murphy and then heading for the river so Freddie can paddle to his hearts content!
Sinéad, Saffron Pawtique:
I try and show my pups appreciation every day, they are such great companions that I can’t help but spend some time with them anyway. Today, being International Dog Day and National Dog Day, I’ll make sure to spend a little more time with them. For Talia she absolutely loves belly rubs and she knows just how to look sweet enough that you absolutely have to give her belly rubs. So after a long walk and some treats we will spend some time together and Talia will receive many belly rubs and cuddles.
Daniel, Saffron Pawtique:
As others who have more than one dog will know, different dogs have different needs. Sometimes showing your dogs appreciation can be as simple as taking your dog for what they are, rather than trying to mould your dog into your idea of what they should be (a bit like people really).
For Pluto, a pomsky who is 30% anxiety, 100% fluff and 150% energy he needs a mixture of consoling when he’s unsure of something and a decent amount of exercise to help keep him sane. He loves to run (a lot more than Talia who prefers belly rubs) so I occasionally take him out without her to allow him to spread his legs without getting hindered. Both dogs also have their own bedroom set up in the basement. Pluto is definitely a dog who appreciates this as it stays nice and cool and gives him a dark den to escape to.
Unconditional love and loyalty; these are the first words that come to mind when describing Coco. We are truly blessed to have the privilege of owning a dog as they truly become part of your family .
Coco has given each one of us something different: discreet therapy, happiness and a purpose to enjoy walks, admire her intelligence and inquisitive mind. She loves to socialise with both people and other dogs alike .
There’s so much to say about the fulfilment of owning a dog - put simply - it’s one of most rewarding things we have done.
To say thank you to Coco and show her our appreciation, today of all days, we will make sure to give her treats and cuddles when she comes back from an adventurous day at Tails Trails.
We would love to hear how you show your dog appreciation too ☺
